BizCover Grant Winner: How I Used the Grant to Power My Podcast

As a small business owner, paediatric speech pathologist, and passionate advocate for helping children communicate, I’m always looking for new ways to reach and support more parents and other healthcare professionals.

Recently, I had the incredible honour of receiving the BizGiver Grant from BizCover, and I wanted to share this milestone with you—because it’s a reflection of not just my journey but the community that has supported me along the way.

When I first saw the email about the $5,000 BizGiver grant, my mind immediately started racing with possibilities. I had this side passion—my podcast, Wine with Wita—which had started as a simple Instagram Live series where I’d share advice and encouragement for parents navigating speech and communication challenges with their children. 

What began as “Wita’s Wednesday Words” had quickly grown into something much bigger, but I knew the quality could be improved and the grant seemed like the perfect opportunity to take things to the next level.

My Journey to Speech Pathology and Podcasting

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a mobile paediatric speech pathologist based in Greater Sydney. I’ve been in this field for over 14 years, but I took a step back to raise my three daughters.

A few years ago, I found my way back to this work after a friend needed help with her daughter’s communication. That one moment of kindness reminded me of how much I love what I do. One client turned into another, and soon, I had a thriving business.

But alongside my speech therapy work, I wanted to create a space where parents could feel heard and supported. That’s how Wine with Wita was born. Through the podcast, I share real stories, tips, and insights to help parents feel less alone in their journey. 

The name comes from the nickname “Wita,” which many of the kids I work with call me because it’s easier for them to say. The “wine” part? That came as a joke during one of my live sessions, but it stuck because it represents connection and conversation—a big part of who I am.

How the BizGiver Grant Helped Me Grow

When I applied for the BizGiver grant, I never imagined how much it would mean to me. Winning wasn’t just about receiving new equipment—it was about validating the impact Wine with Wita has on my listeners and the families I work with.

Before receiving the grant, I was recording with basic equipment. There were constant sound issues, and I had to rely on my phone’s light for video recordings. Thanks to the $5,000 grant, I’ve now invested in a professional microphone, headphones, video recording equipment, and proper lighting. 

These upgrades have transformed the quality of my podcast, making it easier for me to share meaningful stories and advice with parents.

The Bigger Picture

This journey has reminded me of why I do what I do. Every day, I get to make a difference in children’s lives by giving them the tools they need to communicate and connect with the world. Through the podcast, I also get to amplify the voices of parents, helping them feel seen and heard.

Winning the BizGiver grant wasn’t just about improving my podcast—it was about realising the power of community. So many people voted for me, some of whom I had never met, and their support meant the world. 

It showed me that Wine with Wita is more than just a podcast; it’s a platform for connection and understanding.

My Advice to Small Business Owners

If you’re a small business owner considering applying for the BizGiver grant, my advice is simple: go for it. 

Think about your “why”—what drives you, what excites you, and what will make a difference in your business. For me, it was all about creating a podcast that could support parents and other healthcare professionals. Once you know your purpose, pursue it with everything you’ve got. You never know who might be inspired to support you along the way.
