Speaking at the MINDD Forum: Supporting Communication by Entering a Child’s World

Communication Starts Before Words

Did you know that communication does not always start with words?

I recently had the incredible opportunity to speak at the Mindd Forum, an event focused on safe and effective healthcare solutions for the whole family.

The forum brought together leading clinicians, scientists, practitioners, parents, educators and professionals to share strategies in personalised and precision healthcare for brain and mental health conditions, including ADHD, autism, anxiety, learning and language delays, neurodivergence and more.

Looking Beyond What We See

As a paediatric speech pathologist, I see every day that children are not one-dimensional.

Their communication, behaviour, regulation, learning, attention, sleep, sensory needs and overall wellbeing are all connected.

When a child is finding communication difficult, it is so important to look beyond the words they are or are not saying. Sometimes what we see on the surface is only one small part of what is happening underneath.

Entering a Child’s World

My presentation, Supporting Communication by Entering a Child’s World, explored how communication does not begin with words. It begins with connection, engagement, play and understanding the child in front of us.

I shared the importance of meeting children where they are, recognising that behaviour is communication and creating strong foundations so communication has the opportunity to grow.

Why Collaboration Matters

One of the biggest reminders from the MINDD Forum was the importance of collaboration.

When parents, practitioners, educators and health professionals work together, we can better understand what a child needs and support them in a way that feels more connected, practical and meaningful.

Because once we understand the child, we can support the child.

Creating the Conditions for Communication

Speaking at the MINDD Forum was such an honour and a beautiful reminder of the power of entering a child’s world.

When we follow their lead, understand their capacity and support the foundations beneath communication, we create more opportunities for children to connect, learn and thrive.

I am so grateful to have been part of such an important event and to continue sharing this message with families, professionals and communities.
