Hosting Autism Expo Australia: A Day of Connection, Inclusion and Community

Did you know that supporting communication and inclusion can extend far beyond a speech pathology clinic?

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to host Autism Expo Australia, a beautiful community event in South West Sydney dedicated to supporting autistic individuals, their families, carers and professionals.

Autism Expo Australia brings together service providers, therapists, organisations, businesses, advocates and families to share resources, education and support across all stages of life, from diagnosis through to life after school.

It was such an honour to be part of a day created around connection, understanding and empowerment.

As a speech pathologist, I am always reminded that communication is not just about the words a child says. It is about helping children and families feel seen, heard and supported in the way that works best for them.

A Supportive Space for Families

One of the things I loved most about Autism Expo Australia was how thoughtfully the day was designed.

Families had the opportunity to connect with a wide range of vendors and service providers, access helpful resources, enjoy sensory-friendly activities, visit the outdoor sensory space, use a quiet room when needed and connect with other parents and carers during the Sip & Social Hour.

These details matter because inclusion is not just about inviting people into a space. It is about considering what they may need once they arrive.

It is about reducing overwhelm, creating options and making families feel welcome.

Why Events Like This Matter

Autism Expo Australia is supported by Help You Cope, a not-for-profit charity based in Western Sydney dedicated to supporting autism caregivers and their families through wellbeing workshops, support groups and educational programs.

Their work is so important because carers deserve support too. They deserve access to education, practical tools and spaces where they can connect with people who understand their experience.

Events like this remind us that no family should feel like they are navigating this journey alone.

Communication Belongs in Every Community Space

Autistic children and individuals communicate in many different ways. Some use spoken words, while others use gestures, visuals, AAC, body language, behaviour, movement, play or connection.

The more we understand this, the better we can support children in a way that honours their individual communication style.

Communication support does not only happen in therapy. It can happen when a parent gives their child extra time to respond, when a teacher uses visuals to support understanding, when a coach gives clear instructions or when a community member chooses patience over pressure.

Simple changes can make such a big difference in helping children feel more confident, understood and included.

A Moment of Recognition in Parliament

A particularly meaningful moment following Autism Expo Australia 2026 was seeing the event recognised in Parliament. The expo was acknowledged for bringing together families, professionals and the wider community to foster understanding and support for autistic individuals.

It was also recognised as a safe and inclusive space where meaningful connections were formed, stigma was challenged and the voices of carers were heard and valued.

To have the impact of the day acknowledged in this way was incredibly special, and it was an honour to be recognised alongside Joline George, the Help You Cope team, the dedicated volunteers, sponsors and everyone who helped bring such an important community event to life.

A Beautiful Reminder of Community

Hosting Autism Expo Australia was an incredible honour.

It allowed me to be part of important conversations, introduce amazing speakers and witness the incredible work being done across the autism community.

It also reminded me that inclusion is something we all contribute to. Parents, carers, educators, therapists, support workers, business owners and community leaders all play a role in creating spaces where autistic individuals and their families feel supported.

I am so grateful to Joline George, Founder and Director of Help You Cope, and the Autism Expo Australia team for the opportunity to host such a meaningful event.
